Bank of America is running what appears to be a targeted promotion for new business checking accounts offering up to a $750 bonus with very simple requirements. This deal has been around since June, but it just appeared on my wife’s account a few days ago and is only valid until 9/30/21.

The great thing about this checking account bonus is that it’s very easy: deposit money within 15 days of opening the account, leave it there for 60 days, collect a nice bonus and even get Bank of America Preferred Rewards Gold status (which is nice because that aside monthly fee without having to meet any requirements).

While the offer appears to be targeted based on terms, I have seen multiple data points from people who have received bonuses despite not being targeted. YMMV — obviously there’s a chance that it won’t be honored if you’re not targeted.

I did this bonus last year, deposited $20K for 60 days and I immediately received my $500 bonus (see my 2020 bank bonus calculation post for more information about the bonus I did last year). This time, my wife will gladly open an account and get a simple bonus (we often transfer our emergency fund for new bonuses like this). I love that this year they’ve added Preferred Rewards for instant Business Gold level benefits because it means a 25% bonus on qualifying business credit card earnings. The Business Cash Rewards card will be even better with Platinum Honors status, but even at Gold level it becomes a 3.75% card in your choice of categories from gas stations (default), office supply stores, travel, TV/telco & wireless, computer services or services business consulting (with up to $50K per calendar year). I’m not sure that will be a high priority for us right now given all the great bonuses on the market, but since the Preferred Rewards Gold trial is good for 12 months, it might come in handy at some point during that time. At the very least, the 12-month Gold level benefits mean no monthly maintenance fees (which can be avoided with minimum average balances, deposits or debit card activity, but having Gold status avoids the need to worry about them).

Keep in mind that you need to open an account before September 30 and fund it within 15 calendar days. We’ve seen this offer come up a few times before, so it’s definitely possible that this will either be extended or targeted to new groups in the coming weeks.

Everything went well until I only received a $100 bonus…

To my surprise, the $100 bonus was posted to my Bank of America Core Checking Account on August 22nd, about 1 month after signing up for the checking account. The bonus description is not very clear that this transaction is a bonus. I almost missed that bonus posted to my checking account.

1-2 weeks later, I received the following letter from Bank of America informing me that my $100 bonus was posted to my account. But what about the other $50 I owe? I called Bank of America at the number on the letter and explained that I signed up for a Bank of America Core Checking Account with a referral link for $150. The representative put me on hold to investigate. According to the representative, since I am an existing Bank of America credit cardholder, my account is eligible for a $100 bonus by opening a new Bank of America Core Checking Account. The representative said that when I applied for the new Bank of America Core Checking Account, the existing offer code ($100 bonus) was used instead of the referral offer code ($150 bonus). The representative escalated my concerns to another department, and if my claim was approved, I would be mailed a $50 check. The representative stated that the claim could take up to 30 days to process. I thanked the rep for their help and began waiting for the check in the mail. Wouldn’t it be easier to just directly deposit the $50 bonus into my Bank of America Core Checking Account?

Fast forward a month when I called Bank of America to check the status of my claim. The representative said that my claim was approved on October 2nd and a $50 check was sent to me. A few days ago, I received this letter from Bank of America.
